Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance announced that Amy Cooper was being charged with falsely reporting an incident in the third degree. Amy Cooper can be heard saying over the phone that an “African American man” is threatening her after he asked her to leash her dog, leading to an argument between the two.
Christian Cooper was bird watching in April when he asked Amy Cooper to put her dog on a leash because it is against the rules in the Ramble, a secluded section of Central Park popular with birdwatchers, for dogs to be off leash. Amy Cooper called 911 when there wasn’t any emergency and basically lied on this black man. She has become known as “Central Park Karen”
Amy Cooper lost her job shortly after the incident went viral, and protests over the deaths of unarmed Black people such as George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor spread accross the country. Tuesday, Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. announced the charges against her. “On the one hand, she’s already paid a steep price. That’s not enough of a deterrent to others? Bringing her more misery just seems like piling on, said Christian Cooper. He also didn’t agree with Amy Cooper’s earlier public shaming.
Christian Cooper added that he could not prevent Vance from pursuing the charges but that he did not intend to cooperate with the prosecution.( The Hill)
