CEA-LO L.A is set for its Grand Opening April 5th, 2021, located at 5150 Sepulveda Blvd, Sherman Oaks, CA 91403.
Christopher Montgomery (Chef Chris) grew up in the Bronx, New York, where his passion for cooking was first ignited, in the kitchen, side by side with his adoptive father. After some turbulent years in the street life and the death of his adoptive father when he was just 14, Christopher embarked on a journey that would turn his life around forever.
He enrolled into the Culinary Arts and Food Management program at the Art Institute of New York. After graduating, he further advanced his training as a Sous Chef under the renowned (Iron Chef America) Chef David Burke.
Having worked in different venues on the East Coast, including his family’s sister CEA-LO Café in New York, people started to take notice of his cuisine and he received an offer to come to Los Angeles to help launch an establishment.
After successfully fulfilling that contract, he decided it was time to launch his own.
Chef Chris describes CEA-LO LA as a “quick service, scratch kitchen restaurant, established to provide healthy, quality foods and beverages to all its patrons”.
He goes on to say “we are determined to become the driving force and a necessity to those looking for a more cleaner healthier version yet affordable, elevated food for the soul aka Soul Food”.
“The food and beverages that we serve are of the highest quality (organic, locally grown/raised, wild caught), and we pair this with a great service along with an ambient and aesthetic atmosphere. All our menus are drawn to appeal to all ages from children, teenagers to adults.”
Discover Black in LA: CEA-LO L.A with Chef Christopher Montgomery
I was invited to lunch March 17, 2021 ahead of the Grand Opening scheduled for April 5th. I arrived about Noon and was delighted that the CEA-LO L.A was easy to get to, located conveniently off the 101 Freeway.
Upon entering I was met with an exceptionally clean in appearance small dining area that holds about 20 persons. The soulful sounds of R&B music were playing, and, Chef Chris was behind the counter, friendly and accommodating.
Covid-19 precautions were in place. Social distancing signs and hand sanitizer available.
While I was there, several customers came in and I had an opportunity to ask them about their experiences with the food. Two women, who were repeat customers, praised the Fried Whiting Fish and Shrimp.
A gentleman who ordered a Vegetarian platter, spoke very highly of the Black-Eyed Peas, said it reminded him of the Soul Food from back home.
I was served the Chef’s favorite Chicken Sandwich, and I also tasted Fried Shrimp, Macaroni and Cheese, Greens, and Yams. For Dessert I sampled his Sweet Potato pie and for good measure I took one of his Seasonal Fruit Cornbread desserts to go.
Chef Chris specializes in French and American cuisine and makes all food and dessert menu items served, which is impressive.
Most enjoyable for me were the Collard Greens, Candied Yams and Sweet Potato pie. They stood out to me as being just like I have tasted in my own family’s kitchen.
The Seasonal Fruit Cornbread was a concept I had never heard of. I happened to give someone I know a bite of it, and all I heard was mmmm, THAT’S GOOD, really-like Tyler Perry GOODT, with an emphasis! I agreed, and thoroughly enjoyed it.
