A firefighter was killed amid the ongoing battle against the El Dorado Fire in the San Bernardino National Forest, U.S. Forest Service officials confirmed Friday morning. The firefighter was killed Thursday, the forest service said in a brief statement. The cause of death is under investigation and the firefighter’s identity was withheld pending the notification of next of kin.
“Our deepest sympathies are with the family, friends and fellow firefighters during this time,” the forest service said in a brief statement on Twitter.
The fire started Sept. 5 when a couple staged a baby gender reveal at El Dorado Ranch Park at the foot of the San Bernardino Mountains.
The device was set off in a field and quickly ignited dry grass. Authorities have not released the identities of the couple, who could face criminal charges and be held liable for the cost of fighting the fire.
