More than 200 people get infections linked to bagged salad

Health officials issued an alert earlier this week over the multi-state outbreak of the parasitic infection Cyclospora—a diarrhea-causing microscopic parasite—that has sickened 206 people so far, the release stated.

Of those sickened, 23 have been hospitalized. Illnesses have been reported in Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota and Wisconsin. Symptoms of the disease include watery diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss, cramping, bloating, increased gas, nausea and fatigue. Health people usually recover from the infection without treatment, but doctors may choose to treat with antibiotics.

The salad mixes are sold by ALDI, HY-Vee, and Jewel-Osco. The government investigation found that the mix, which is produced by Fresh Express, was also sold at Walmart stores. The mixes are under different brand names at the different stores.
